2011 Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc hands-on pictures and video

pictures and video on Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc hands

We got our hands on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc and we hurry to give you some live shots, video demos and quick screen comparison with two of the most popular mobile screens out there. The Arc is full of surprises, so let's not waste any more time and see some action.
We expected quite a big gadget, but in the end we found the Arc is ok to handle as there's hardly any unused space around the 4.2" screen. The extraordinary 8.7mm thickness (in the center at least) and the arc-like design add for the impression of a smartphone that's quite smaller than what the screen size might suggest.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc live shots
The battery cover reminds us of XPERIA X8 with the dark blue splash at the bottom. Unfortunately Sony Ericsson has decided to use glossy plastic, which turns the rear panel into a smudge magnet. The smudge problem also applies for the mineral glass-covered display, but similar to iPhone 4 you can easily clean it.

More live shots of XPERIA Arc
Proceeding to the software side of things we meet something familiar. The XPERIA Arc has the typical Sony Ericsson theme and TimeScape UI but beneath that there's the latest Android Gingerbread. Here is a demo video:

We were surprised by the lack of the Mediascape UI, but this just might be due to the pre-release status of our unit.
Unlike its X10 predecessor, the Arc is fast and responsive all the time, without any interface glitches, loadings or noticeable lag whatsoever. And this is just a pre-release unit with the software being far from final. We expect the retail Arc to be an excellent performer.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc relies on an LED-backlit LCD screen with the BRAVIA Mobile Engine for picture improvement. Sony Ericsson calls that combo the Reality display. Well, in reality, it's nothing out of this world.
If we have to compare it (and we do, don't we?), it's definitely better than the screen of the Desire HD and that of the previous XPERIA X10. The Samsung's Super AMOLED screens and the Apple iPhone screen are still on top. And so is, the Nokia Clear Black display too. So on it's own, the Arc's Reality display is a really nice achievement but that's about it.

The Arc's Reality display compared to iPhone Retina and Samsung Galaxy S Super AMOLED
Looking head-on at the Arc's display the colors seems natural and the contrast is excellent. When you look from the side, the viewing angles are nice too, but the contrast and the colors can't keep up.

The Arc's Reality display compared to iPhone Retina and Samsung Galaxy S Super AMOLED
Still we give the credit of Sony Ericsson for the improvement over its previous generation displays and hope we'll see some development in this direction.
Well, that's pretty much everything we wanted to share with all of you today. We're working on our XPERIA Arc preview and you should expect it in a few days.

2011 HTC Gratia review,Body double,

2011 Review HTC Gratia:Body Double,New Review HTC

Introduction
Compact but capable, subdued but edgy, old but new. That’s the HTC Gratia. With Froyo greasing the cogs, the European version of the HTC Aria is more than a name change – this petite droid is getting ready to storm the Old Continent.
HTC Gratia official photos
The Android world is in a stage where big screens make the grade, which makes it frustratingly hard for people who like their droid in a small package. The compact Gratia comes with a 3.2” screen and is noticeably smaller than competing phones with the same display diagonal.
Before we go on though, here’s the gist of what’s in store.

Key features

  • 3.2" 256K-color HVGA capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch input
  • Compact body and bold industrial design
  • Android 2.2 Froyo with Sense UI
  • Qualcomm MSM7227 600 MHz CPU and 384MB RAM
  • Quad-band GSM support with dual-band HSDPA 7.2Mbps and HSUPA 2 Mbps
  • Wi-Fi b/g connectivity
  • Built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS support
  • 5 MP autofocus camera; touch focus, geotagging and face detection
  • VGA video recording at 20fps
  • microSD card slot (32GB supported, 2GB included)
  • Office document and PDF viewer
  • Optical trackpad
  • Standard microUSB port and Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP
  • Standard 3.5mm audio jack
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • Flash enabled in the web browser
  • YouTube client, Facebook and Twitter integration
  • Very good audio quality
  • Excellent loudspeaker performance
  • USB tethering; Wi-Fi hotspot

Main disadvantages

  • Screen has poor sunlight legibility
  • Patchy Flash support in the browser
  • Card slot under the battery cover
  • No DivX/XviD video support out-of-the-box
  • No secondary video-call camera
  • No dedicated camera key, no lens cover and no camera flash

Despite the clean, simple lines, the Gratia is recognizable enough thanks to the signature screws on the back. Some might confuse it with the HD mini, which originated the look, but Android’s explosive popularity means that the Aria/Gratia phones have far surpassed their PocketPC cousin.

HTC Gratia live shots
HTC have put their magic touch on the HTC Gratia interface – the Sense UI is elegant and highly usable, with special focus on social networking. The speed boost from running Froyo rather than Eclair is a major advantage and Flash support in the browser is relatively rare in the midrange.
The Gratia software is certainly one of the highlights but the hardware deserves praise as well. The phone is solidly built and feels sturdy in the hand, without being bulky or heavy.
Okay, enough warm up – time to jump into the review. On the next page we start with opening the box and examining the contents. After that, our tour of the exterior begins.

New Nokia bullish about 2011,Nokia N8

Nokia bullish about 2011,Nokia Future

You could be forgiven for thinking that the hype around Apple and Android has left Nokia for dead. Far from it, says the Irish country manager, who tells Ian Campbell why 2011 is going to be a big year for the company

ALAN O’HARA has a bone to pick with the media. The country manager for Nokia Ireland is somewhat irked by the very public love affair between the press and Apple, which, he argues, gives a distorted impression of the mobile market.

He has a point. Last year’s iPad launch attracted unprecedented coverage for a consumer electronics product, with online news sites delivering minute-by-minute coverage of the press conference and most newspapers dutifully reporting its arrival the next day. The hype followed the success of the iPhone, Apple’s first mobile handset which achieved iconic status from a standing start.

For Nokia, the world’s leading manufacturer of mobile devices, media relations have been a good deal more strained. The Financial Times dismissed its latest smartphone, the N8, the same day it covered its launch. Despite some positive reviews, there has been a general wave of apathy towards the product, with the Symbian 3 operating system variously described as dated and sluggish compared to the iPhone and a growing band of Android devices.

“I’d like to see the media look at the overall consumer offering and take the product for a proper test drive. Everyone is het up about operating systems but, when you’re buying a car, you don’t just look at the engine, you look at the overall package,” says O’Hara. He lists a wide range of features available on the N8 that you would struggle to find on competing products – a 12MB camera and HD video with HDMI output, and near-field communications technology are standout features.

Feeling short-changed about the absence of head-to-head comparisons, O’Hara is also concerned about the preoccupation with high-end smartphones. “We’re getting a speed wobble in that particular segment, but we’re playing in the mass market at every price point.”

A third of all handsets globally are made by Nokia and the company is particularly strong in underdeveloped countries and emerging markets, which account for the largest share of its revenues. Robust, easy-to-use “candybar” phones are best sellers, despite limited functionality.

In the developed markets, Nokia has a wide range of products at every price point, including a choice of smartphones rather than a single iconic product. Nokia’s global market share is about 35 per cent, a figure that is substantially higher in Ireland, according to O’Hara, where 70 per cent of mobile phones are sold through retailers. With about 60 phones in its current range, shelves are not short of Nokia products.

This level of penetration has been hard-earned over many years. Since Nokia equipment was used for the first phone call over a GSM network in 1991, the Finnish company has enjoyed a 20-year reign that is only matched by Microsoft’s dominance of the desktop.

A slick user interface and sturdy build quality made it the must-have brand, seeing off names like NEC and Motorola. It took pole position in most of the world by the mid-Nineties and has stayed there ever since. Tellingly, the first signs of fallibility were around the emergence of WAP at the start of the Noughties, the first foray into multimedia services and mobile access to the internet.

As handsets evolved into mini-computers, manufacturers struggled to keep the interface user friendly. The promise of a one-stop communications device for information and entertainment was enticing but it took Apple to do it well. The superior touch screen on the iPhone, coupled with iTunes and then the App Store, offered a compelling range of services that Nokia has struggled to match. “We have been playing catch-up with Apple but we are making huge inroads,” O’Hara adds.

The company has worked hard to improve its Ovi platform, where users can download apps, music and games. O’Hara claims the changes have been well received in Ireland, where the number of app downloads has increased by 50 per cent in the last year from a six-figure starting point.

He puts great store on local activity and cites it as a way to distance itself from the competition. This year, the Irish office will be looking to encourage more Irish brands to develop apps and content for Ovi, while local operators are encouraged to get on board with a shared revenue model.

There are also plans to open an online store that will sell the complete range of SIM-free phones and accessories, something it already does in other parts of Europe, including Britain.

“We’re always getting knocked in Ireland for not making phones available that you can get in other markets. We will deal direct with consumers at a time when handset subsidies from operators are decreasing.”

O’Hara prefers to talk local rather than global where rumours are rife about Nokia launching phones with an Android or Windows Phone 7 operating system. All he will confirm is that MeeGo, the operating system developed with Intel that will co-exist with Symbian rather than replace it, will be on a new generation of Nokia mobiles by the second half of the year.

A Nokia tablet is not likely. “The jury’s still out,” O’Hara says. “Personally, I’m not convinced that they are selling that well and I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a price drop coming.”

He is equally unconvinced by Microsoft’s latest move with Windows Phone 7. “It hasn’t created any noise in the Irish market. They need operators to embrace it.”

Top of O’Hara’s agenda is for Nokia to steal back some of the high end.

“In the first half of 2011, you will see us become serious competitors with the N8, C7 and C3 smartphones. Maps, music, social networking and location-based services will all become more prevalent this year and we will be at the forefront of all of them.”

New Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type review,The missing link

2011Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type review,Nokia Features

Introduction
Nokia seem to have the missing link in the evolution of mobile phones. The Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type is an attempt to bring the best of both worlds. A touch phone in a form factor that’s as classic as it gets.
Like it or not, touchscreen phones are the future and it would be a smart move to get ready for the switch. It’s up to you really. You can choose while there still is choice. Or you can simply wait for the inevitable.
But you know what, you can be as uncertain and old-fashioned and backward about touchscreen as you like. And still be prepared. The transition doesn’t have to be painful says Nokia with their C3-01 Touch and Type.

Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type official photos
And as we found out reviewing the Nokia X3-02, the touchscreen/numpad combo worked impressively well on a slim metallic body. Little wonder then, Nokia are going for the same thing with the C3-01 Touch and Type.

Key features
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
Quad-band 3G with 10Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA
Neat and well built, slim, light and metal clad
2.4" 256K-color resistive TFT QVGA touchscreen
S40 6th edition UI
5 megapixel fixed-focus camera
VGA video recording at 15fps
Wi-Fi b/g/n
Stereo FM radio with RDS, Visual radio
Bluetooth v2.1 (with A2DP)
Standard microUSB port (charging enabled)
USB On-The-Go functionality
microSD card slot (32 GB supported)
3.5mm audio jack
Extra soft and precise haptic feedback

Main disadvantages
Small screen (for a touch phone)
No multitasking
No GPS
Fixed-focus camera
No smart dialing
No video-call camera
No adequate storage out of the box
No accelerometer sensor
No document viewer
The Nokia C3-01 starts from roughly the same spot as its X3-02 sibling. And obviously, it isn’t going anywhere more exciting or advanced. This kind of phones have their limitations and they’re more than obvious. S40 handsets have been getting a lot of stick (at least from us) for the lack of even basic multitasking, smart dialing and a document viewer.

Nokia C3-01 pays us a visit
But still, we did like the touch and type concept – more for the look and feel and less for the features. The C3-01 will have to live up to a very high standard of build quality and design to boost its chances of survival. It certainly helps though to have a true classic and a massive bestseller as an inspiration. The Nokia 6300 belongs to different times but its timeless charm is all over the C3-01.

2011 New Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc finally official, confirms all rumors

2011Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc finally official, confirms all rumors,Mobile News

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc has just been officially unveiled. After the two extensive leaks yesterday this announcement hardly brings much new information that, but at least it confirms what we knew so far is true.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc
The curved Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc handset is merely 8.7mm thick at its slimmest part and packs a large 4.2" capacitive touchscreen of FWVGA (854 x 480 pixels) resolution, which Sony Ericsson call Reality display. A mineral glass is installed on top of the LCD screen to protect it from scratches, while the Bravia Engine Mobile should notably improve its image quality.

Running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the smartphone, previously known as Anzu, offers an 8 megapixel still camera with the new backlit Sony Exmor R sensor and 720p HD video recording capabilities. The f/2.4 aperture of the camera lens should improve the low-light performance of the XPERIA Arc camera even further. It's powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm CPU and has 512 MB of RAM. There will be an 8GB microSD card bundled with it so that should provide you with adequate storage out of the box.

On the connectivity end, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc offers 3G with HSDPA (depending on your region with dual-band or quad-band support), quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and a microUSB port. The microHDMI port allows you to share you pictures and videos on an external monitor in HD resolution. Naturally, there is also a 3.5mm audio jack on board.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc will be available in late Q1 or early Q2 in Midnight Blue and Misty Silver. There is no information about the pricing of the device though.

New Freescale hits with dual-core and quad-core mobile CPUs,Smartphones

CpUs Quad-Core Mobile,Freescale hits with dual 2011,3D imaging

Smartphone and tablet processors are just about entering the dual-core stages of their evolution and Freescale wants to join the party. Not only this, the company is even willing to throw a quad-core CPU our way just for the fun of it.
Freescale just announced a trio of new mobile processors, suitable for use in Smartphones, Tablets and eReaders. The three versions of the i.MX 6 CPU are called Solo, Dual and Quad and come with one, two and four Cortex A9 cores respectively. Each of the cores can be clocked at up to 1.2 GHz. The level 2 cache isn't quoted for each of the CPUs but Freescale says it reaches 1 MB (presumably on the quad-core unit).

Still each and every of the i.MX 6 processors is said to allow full HD (as in 1080p) video decoding and encoding. There's also support for HDMI v1.4 and multiple USB 2.0 ports. The stereoscopic image sensor support allows for 3D imaging, provided that someone builds the right camera module for the task.
Freescale plans to start sampling the new CPUs later this year, which isn't nearly as specific as we hoped to get. Anyway we don't expect to be seeing one of those babies on an actual tablet or smartphone before the next holiday season.
