Microsoft Windows 8 in 2012 and the Future
Windows 8 will be available in 2012, confirmed by Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer on Monday. Speaking at a Microsoft Developer Forum in Tokyo, Ballmer didn’t confirm any features of the up and coming operating system, although he did go into details about where Microsoft are investing their money.
Ballmer confirmed Microsoft are investing heavily in user interface and natural language features, saying “Microsoft wants your device to recognize you and your actions, like Kinect does for gaming”. Microsoft are also investing in HTML and Javascript, with Ballmer saying “we have to recognize that more and more of the world’s talent will know these techniques.”

Ballmer also talked about the Windows Phone, including the 500 new features that are expected in the next upgrade. An announcement about these features is likely at a press event in New York later this week. Tablet development is also on the cards for Microsoft, although Ballmer admitted that they have “some work to do” in this area.

While he may have been short on details regarding features and time lines, it was interesting to hear the vision that Ballmer has for the future of Microsoft. In one interesting moment, he said “there will be a day in the future where it will be hard to distinguish a phone from a slate, from a PC. You literally will have displays that become paper thin and very easy to fold out form your phone, and at the same time, you’re going to get more and more PC-like capabilities in smaller form factor devices.”
Ballmer said Microsoft is “obviously hard at work on the next version of Windows. As we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there’s a whole lot more coming,” he added. “As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors.”
Microsoft expects sales of its Windows Mobile platform products will account for 40% of the global smartphone market in fiscal 2012 (July 2011-June 2012), according to Eddie Wu, managing director of Microsoft ODM embedded devices, Asia,” Daniel Shen and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes.
“Microsoft currently focuses its efforts on promoting the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system and the company has no plans to launch Windows Mobile 7 until 2009, Wu stated,” Shen and Shen report.

Good God, they must be giving them hallucinogens now!
Microsoft’s sales of its Windows Mobile platform products will account for 40% of the global smartphone market the day they exclude Apple (and all other non-Microsoft) products from the definition of “smartphone market.” And not a day sooner.
